Where these lists come from

A Book in Order lists 4 book series and authors in reading order. Every list is built the same way, from the same source, so you get the same answer whichever page you land on.

The source

Titles and publication years come from Open Library, the Internet Archive's open bibliographic database. Editions of the same work are collapsed to one entry, so a book doesn't appear three times because it had three covers.

Publication order, not chronological order

Lists follow the order books were published. For most series that's also the best reading order, because later books assume you've read the earlier ones — even when the story jumps backwards in time. Where a series has a genuinely different in-universe chronology, publication order is still where we'd tell a first-time reader to start.

When a list is wrong

Open Library is community-maintained, so mistakes happen: a missing title, a companion volume treated as a main entry, a wrong year. Tell us on the contact page and we'll correct it.
